Make your five-a-day a little bit greener
If you’re trying to make shopping for your greens a little bit greener, deciding on which changes are worth making can be tricky (particularly if you’re trying to save money too). Should you buy seasonal local produce, or support third world farmers? Is it better to buy organic from overseas, or non-organic from a farm down the road?
So to help you, here’s our five-a-day for greener shopping:
- Cut down on the number of short journeys you use your car for. Give the supermarket a miss, leave your car at home and walk to your local shops. And you don’t need to worry about carrying heavy bags, because shopping trolleys are back in fashion – Trendy trolley.
- Pick your own, visit a farm shop or farmers market for local seasonal produce that hasn’t travelled far.
- Don’t buy fruit and vegetables that are packaged in trays and wrapped in plastic. Choose loose items, and if you need to put them in a bag, use a paper one or re-use an old plastic one.
- Grow your own. If you’ve got the space or you can get an allotment (and you’re willing to put in some work), then why not try growing your own vegetables. You can grow them organically and you’ll really notice the difference when you taste your own, freshly picked veggies.
- Ditch the ready meals. Not only do they tend to cost more (and taste worse) than a home cooked equivalent, they are usually packaged in plastic containers, sealed with cellophane, and have an outer box.
And if we’ve inspired you to transform your garden, you’ll want to make sure your home insurance covers the new potting shed and hoe!
