Contents Insurance for all that glitters

home icon

When we talk about ‘new for old’ contents insurance for our jewellery, it doesn’t sound quite right, after all, much of the jewellery we own is irreplaceable because of it’s sentimental value.

Sadly, replacing what’s gone with a new equivalent is the only option when jewellery is lost or stolen, so it’s important you know the insurance value of any expensive pieces you have bought yourself, been given or inherited over the years. If you’re not sure where to take your jewellery to be valued, The Guild of Valuers and Jewellers website has a store finder and they also run valuation days. Granny’s old brooch may look like costume jewellery, but it’s worth checking!

And while you’re sorting out your jewellery to be valued, take some photographs – they can be really helpful if you ever need to make a claim.

Privilege Home Insurance provides up to £50,000 of contents insurance as standard (on a new-for-old basis) which means you should be able to replace any lost or stolen item with an equivalent brand new piece. Any items of jewellery valued at £2,000 or more must be specified individually (or £3,000, with Privilege Platinum contents insurance).

For full details of standard and Platinum cover, you can read our Privilege Home Contents Insurance Policies online.

And as we don’t normally remove our jewellery and tuck it safely away before we leave the house, our home contents insurance also provides cover for when you’re out and about in the UK. If you want to increase the level of cover you have away from the home (in the UK and abroad), Personal Possessions cover is also available from Privilege (included as standard with Platinum cover).

So dig out your jewellery and make sure it’s properly covered by contents insurance, get a quote from Privilege today. And while you’ve got it all out, why not put it all on!
