Driving in a traffic jam
Traffic jams can be hazardous because of the constant stop-start driving conditions, which can take immense amounts of concentration. But you can do your part to drive in a measured way, looking ahead, staying calm and being prepared.
Be prepared
The chance of you, or another driver, overheating and breaking down in slow traffic is high, as the stop-start conditions take a toll on the engine.
Here are some things to consider if you are faced with a car in front of you breaking down:
1. Stay alert so you don’t enter the collision yourself
2. Be ready to pull over if necessary
3. If you want to help, and have the time, have a mobile phone or jump lead accessible
And if you are in an accident yourself:
1. Stay calm and don’t panic
2. Have your insurance details at hand
3. Remain polite when talking to the other driver
If you know you are going to drive in slow traffic in the snow or severe weather:
1. Ensure you have a blanket and perhaps a flask of coffee with you
2. Ensure you have checked your fluid and tyre levels beforehand
3. Have a mobile phone and a good book to read in case you break down!
Look ahead
Looking further down the road will increase your chances of anticipating changes in traffic speed, and give you more time to avoid problems that are about to happen.
In stop-start traffic, many drivers are only looking at the car ahead, so their eyes begin to glaze and concentration levels wane. But if you also keep glancing into the distance, it could buy you valuable time, whilst helping you to work out the trend of the traffic.
Anticipating when you’ll need to slow down will give you an advantage in rush-hour traffic, as gradual braking and minimal use of gears also saves fuel. So, look ahead to see when you’ll need to come to a stop, and aim to be able to simply take your foot off the accelerator, rather than having to jam it on the brakes.
Combat stress
Rush-hour traffic can be stressful, especially if you are up against the clock, trying to get to a meeting in time, or home for dinner. Try these six top tips to combat the stress of traffic jams:
1. Concentrate on relaxing your shoulders, arms and body as you drive.
2. If you are in stationary traffic, roll your head and shoulders and have a stretch.
3. Breathe in deeply, right in to the bottom of your stomach, and then right out again. Repeat this as many times as you need to.
4. Listen to classical or mood music that will help you to relax.
5. Listen to something that will make you laugh.
6. Get into an audio book – it will pass the time and keep you alert and entertained.
